For my game I have chosen to create a TARDIS flight simulator. I have chosen this because I am a fan of Doctor Who and there aren’t any Doctor Who games being made aside from “The Eternity Clock” and “The Adventure Games”. I chose the flight simulator genre because it is an under-saturated market and there aren’t many flight simulator games being sold recently on stores like Steam or Origin. The game begins with The Doctor being in a time crash and having to fly the TARDIS to safety, back to Earth. This will be a cutscene which will disguise the loading screen in order to make a seamless transition into the gameplay. Once the cutscene ends the camera will pan around and inside of The Doctor’s head, similar to how Goldeneye64 started levels.
Once the player takes control, they will have to run around the TARDIS, pressing buttons and pulling levers in the right order so that the TARDIS will fly and escape. Once the lever closest to the door has been pulled the camera will zoom out and show the TARDIS flying through the vortex as the player controls and manoeuvres it around asteroids and other hazards and enemies as the game progresses. The game will feature collectable items and a whole galaxy to explore, as well as enemies to fight by using a procedural generated universe, similar to No Man’s Sky, which makes it so that we can have a vast and variable universe but not actually do as much work because of it being randomised.

JPG - JPG, or JPEG format is a lossy compression method of rasterising an image. It works by compressing clusters of colours together in order to make the image size smaller. It also does not support an alpha layer.
PNG - PNG is a lossless compression method of rasterising an image. It is similar to JPG but has the advantage of supporting an alpha layer. This results in a smaller file size but not quite as small as a JPG file would be. DDS - DDS is a file format which is similar to PNG, but also supports multiple different types of compression, from lossy ones to lossless ones. Depending on the type of compression you choose, you can either have an alpha layer or not. DDS is the most versatile and preferred file format for game engines and is used in both the Gamebryo engine, which powers games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion, and also the Unreal Engine, which powers games like Bioshock and Splinter Cell. TGA - TGA is a file format that is used a lot in games, and is very similar to PNG. GIF - the GIF image format is mostly used in web design, it is also used prominently in memes. Sprite sheets Sprite sheets are basically a series of images you can put together to create a level simply by using the sprite sheet as a blueprint and then adding any moving platforms onto the map afterwards. Concept art Concept art is used for creating models in a game. It is the first thing you need to design before you can actually begin working on the game as the concept art is meant to give you a rough idea of how the game will look and how much detail will be placed into it with the given art style. Here is some concept art from the game "Dishonored", as you can see it gives off the dark and moody atmosphere the game was going for and beautifully expresses how the game was designed to look like. Here is some concept art from Skyrim. As we can see it shows off a cold town in the mountains and the large buildings in the background give a very imposing look. Print media Print media is basically promotional materials for the game. Print media includes box art, posters, internet advertisement and also possibly trailers or animations depending on the content type. This is important for games development as adverts and the games box art will be some of the first things people see about the game and it's best to make a good first impression.
Photo-realistic Many games use a photo realistic look in order to get better graphics into the game so that it looks like a realistic image. A lot of games do this as more and more people use graphics to judge a game. For instance, Metal Gear Solid V uses a photorealistic art style in order to emphasize its cinematic feeling. Metal Gear Solid V also does a lot with lighting in that due to this being a stealth/action hybrid game, it means that lighting is key in presenting a highly detailed world. GTA V uses its photo-realistic art style in order to parody real life and create a world that is so realistic that it took many years of development time just to build the richly detailed map. Cel-shaded Borderlands uses a cell shaded art style in order to get across a silly and over the top tone that’s meant to be light hearted and comedic. However not many people like the cell shaded art style and feel Borderlands would be better as a comic book/photorealistic hybrid similar to the Tell-Tale action/adventure games which have pseudo-realistic textures but many characters are overly shaded or scaled in order to give the idea that some chatacters are stronger than they appear to be. Anime Anime is a very abstract kind of art style, exaggerating facial features, usually eyes, for an artistic effect. There have been many anime features which have used the art style effectively to create fight scenes, such as the Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto series.
Orthographic Drawing is basically a view from the top, back and sides of an object in order to give the viewer an idea of what the object in question looks like from all angles, making it easier to 3D model.
It is important in the gaming industry to have an orthographic point of view for when the concept artist passes the image onto the 3D artist so that they can do a perfect recreation and have it match the scale identically to the image the concept artist provided. Without this orthographic projection, making the model would be extremely difficult to match the scale exactly and could end up with a slightly askew model and at the worst case scenario, start again from scratch. The gaming industry uses orthographic projection due to the fact that the 3D artist may not be able to see the building in real life so wouldn’t know how to create it accurately. Therefore, orthographic drawings are needed so that the building can be displayed from all angles, making it possible to create it perfectly in a 3D application such as Maya or 3DS Max. Orthographic drawings are also necessary if the object does not exist in real life, because if it does not exist then it can be extremely difficult to recreate exactly how the concept artist wants. |
