Orthographic Drawing is basically a view from the top, back and sides of an object in order to give the viewer an idea of what the object in question looks like from all angles, making it easier to 3D model.
It is important in the gaming industry to have an orthographic point of view for when the concept artist passes the image onto the 3D artist so that they can do a perfect recreation and have it match the scale identically to the image the concept artist provided. Without this orthographic projection, making the model would be extremely difficult to match the scale exactly and could end up with a slightly askew model and at the worst case scenario, start again from scratch. The gaming industry uses orthographic projection due to the fact that the 3D artist may not be able to see the building in real life so wouldn’t know how to create it accurately. Therefore, orthographic drawings are needed so that the building can be displayed from all angles, making it possible to create it perfectly in a 3D application such as Maya or 3DS Max. Orthographic drawings are also necessary if the object does not exist in real life, because if it does not exist then it can be extremely difficult to recreate exactly how the concept artist wants.
