Step one: making blueprints
We had to start making blueprints for our building so we have an understanding of what we are doing and how we proceed on creating it. This stage is before creating the mind maps and brainstorming, which will be about how our building looks.
Step 2: Build the basic and untextured level in UE4
Step 3: Texturing and doors
I decided to use basic white walls and a wooden floor as I felt this gave the area the atmosphere of an office building. This will be later changed to provide better details, of course.
The doors operate on a blueprint which is used to open and close the doors by pressing the 'e' key when close to them.
Step 3: Lighting, windows and furnishing
For step 3 I added in some lights, as well as made some crates and tables in maya, which were then textured and put into UE4
Evaluation
Building this level in Unreal Engine 4 was very useful as I learned how to make doors open and close by using a custom blueprint that uses the 'e' key and use proper lighting. I also learned how to go from blueprints to making a normal sized room in Unreal Engine (which is 1000x1000 for a small box room) In my house I made a board room, a cafe, and a few storage rooms. I then had to add in lighting and import all of my assets. I ran into a few issues with that as I had limited RAM to work with and the program kept closing for this reason. Too many lights and textures made it difficult to work with. However, despite this I managed to do my project with minimal problems.
To make the doors move when pressing a key instead of automatically I had used a youtube tutorial to make the door respond to a box, and once your character is inside the box and the 'e' key is pressed it will make the door open and close on command. Unfortunately I did not have the time required to add in sound effects for the doors opening and closing and feel that would have added a little more to the level if those sounds were added.
If I were to do this task again I would use my knowledge from this task to create higher detail models so that the areas of the level were not so empty. I feel like a few paintings or something on the walls would have given the area a much nice atmosphere.
